High Frequency Radio Broadcasts for Marine Weather Forecasts/Warnings
The United States Coast Guard is currently soliciting public comment on the need to continue providing high frequency (HF) weather forecasts and warnings via radio broadcast. Public comment is necessary to assess the demand for the HF radio broadcasts in the following forms:
(1) Radio Facsimile.
(2) Voice.
(3) Simplex Teletype over Radio (SITOR), also known as Narrow Band Direct Printing (NBDP).
Unfortunately, the infrastructure necessary to provide these services has exceeded its life expectancy. The equipment is no longer manufactured, repairs are difficult to accomplish, and spare parts are generally not available. Due to the significant costs associated with the continuance of HF radio services, the U.S. Coast Guard is seeking further information that details the extent to which these services are used by the public and what alternative services are being used or are available to obtain weather forecasts and warnings.
All comments must reach the Docket Management Facility no later than August 24, 2007. For additional information, including a copy of the complete text, please visit the National Weather Service website at http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/marine/waisgate.pdf.
