Russian Nuclear Battle Cruiser Could Explode

Admiral Vladimir Kuroyedov, head of Russia?s Navy, said that the battle cruiser was in disrepair and could explode anytime. The ?Peter the Great? has a nuclear reactor onboard and was recalled from exercises on the Barents Sea.

The cruiser is normally based in Murmansk, and which port it has been called back to is unclear. The Russian newspaper, Kommersant, said that Admiral Kuroyedov?s decision to declare the battle cruiser unfit is due to a personal conflict with retired Admiral Igor Kasatonov, who is the uncle of the cruiser?s captain, Rear Admiral Vladimir Kasatoniv.

The Russian media has criticized Kuroyedov over the sinking of the nuclear submarine ?Kursk? in the Barents Sea in August, 2000. 118 sailors lost their lives after two onboard explosions.
